Diabetes and mental health

karanjaleh:

I think many people underestimate the mental aspect of having diabetes. How you manage it (once you get the hang of it) is really not extremely difficult. What’s hard is the frustration of calculating carbs at every meal, underestimating the amount of insulin to give yourself (even slightly) and feeling like shit as you run high for the rest of the day, or not getting a good nights sleep because you’re dealing with low blood sugars. You can do everything to achieve perfect blood sugars but every once in awhile you will get a low or high blood sugar and I think that causes some people to just feel hopeless and give up. Diabetes can so easily control your thoughts and emotions and I don’t believe anyone without diabetes quite understands that. This isn’t supposed to be a negative rant, just what I believe is a very realistic opinion. You hear all these model diabetics proclaim, “Diabetes doesn’t control me, I control my diabetes!” This is a wonderful motto and something everyone should strive for. But realistically, diabetes is a condition that does take up a large part of your life, what matters is how you respond to this, negatively or positively. You can beat yourself up over every little glucose reading and how your managing your readings or you can just say, “You know, what I’m dealing with isn’t easy. I’m doing the best I can. What can I do better?” And proceed to do so. <3

 • Friend: My life sucks
 • Me: My pancreas doesn't work, what's your excuse?
 • Friend: (Walks away)

They’re playing FFVI now guys. I donated 5 canadian dollars. It’s for Type 1 diabetes and they’re now playing the best Final Fantasy ever how can you not

fucking awesome donate

So doctor upped my Levemir/Lantus dosage. Bad idea, blood sugar is now perpetually borderline low. So gonna dial it down because I couldn’t sleep much last night as a result.

15 years and I’ll still never be used to this nonsense.

My endocrinologist has found the exact right way to make me feel bad about not giving more care to my diabetes without making me feel like a miserable human being at the same time. Some of my lab stuff was fine, some wasn’t. So he decided okay, you’re not loaded. So just test your blood sugar twice a day. And then he gave me a bunch of insulin.

I’ve already got exercise down so I gotta find cheap healthy eating alternatives and test my blood sugar. Walmart sells these generic test strips, 50 for $9 so I’m gonna spend some time this weekend looking for that. I really want to do better and stay on the ball with this for once. I don’t like letting him down and stuff.

“Please take the sample from my hand.” “No I’m sure I can get it from your arm-” “FOR GODS SAKE LISTEN TO ME IM THE ONE WHO’S HAD DIABETES FOR 15 YEARS I KNOW WHAT’S BEST” I mean really #diabetes #type1diabetes

jtem asked: Shouldn't you be doing your insulin in your belly?

I was at work and I didn’t feel like going to the bathroom because I tend to eat my lunch outside. And my work shirt was tucked in and stuff. Asides that, the arm is an injection site, but most likely I’m supposed to use the forearm.

I complicate things unnecessarily sometimes.
